Science College Week

22nd - 26th March 2010

‘The Earth in Space’

The annual Nunnery Wood Science College Week for this academic year will place between the 22nd and 26th March 2010 Our theme for Science College Week this year ‘The Earth in Space’ is based upon National Science and Engineering Week whose theme is ‘The Earth’. ‘The Earth in Space’ theme also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a space telescope that was carried into orbit by the space shuttle in April 1990. Science College Week is part of our whole school STEM (science, technology, engineering and Maths) focus of raising student understanding of the STEM agenda, STEM qualifications and STEM careers. Already this year Nunnery Wood has hosted successful STEM Space days, STEM ambassadors from Jaguar Land Rover and E-On, and STEM ACE days. During Science College week KS3 students will have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of lessons with an ‘Earth in Space’ theme. Examples include designing space cars in CDT lessons, studying how the ancient world viewed space in History lessons and designing and making an animated tour of the solar system in ICT lessons. There are many more subject based and extracurricular activities going on during Science College Week. We have also invited students from our feeder schools to join us on the 30th March to watch the ‘The Magna Kitchen Sink Show Live’. The Kitchen Sink Show provides loads of fun and lots of engaging science as pupils help the presenter investigate science in the kitchen. As usual Science College Week provides an exciting opportunity for all students to promote their own individual skills and strengths by entering one of the many competitions that will take place. Prizes will be presented during end of term assemblies.

I am sure that students will enjoy all of the various activities that will occur during Science College Week.

Alien World

Yrs 7-9

Looking at the work of Hunderwasser, students to explore a wide range of materials and techniques in unusual and unlikely combinations.

Students will be producing multi media abstract pieces which will be displayed as part of a large scale three dimensional structure.

CDT

Alien World

Year 7 and 9

Understand how to generate an idea for an “alien space car” that would be used to drive around the different planets in space. Understand how to use specific design criteria to help you design your space car.

Pupils will come up with an idea for an “alien space car” from specific design criteria.

Drama

War of the Worlds

Yrs 7 and 10

Re-interpret a segment of music (from “War of the Worlds”) as a series of dramatic tableaux with possibility of expansion into short dramatic scene.

Animals in Danger   Out of this World Holidays     Trip to the Moon

7   8      9

To explore the issue of endangered animals on earth and consider how this can be expressed in a poetic form. To explore how maps use signs and symbols to convey messages.      To consider the prediction made by scientists that the USA will have a permanent base on the moon by 2020 with holidays there to follow, students should design an advert persuading people to visit the moon. They will be exploring how to use persuasive and presentational devices.

Pupils will write a poem – free choice over form and devices used. Pupils will select a planet and design a map showing a holiday destination. This will be presented to the rest of the class.   Print based advert.

Food Tech.

“ How do you eat in space?”

7,8,9

1.       An opportunity to investigate and discuss:·         the history surrounding the development of food in space·         how food is provided in space   2.       Sensory analysis of food developed for space travel. 3.       Designing a food (Yr 9) or food tray (Yrs 7 & 8) for a space journey.

PE

Within lesson pupils will be looking at the concept of flight within all activity areas. The theme of flight has been chosen because it relates to the earth’s gravitational pull.

Key stage three - pupils will be doing this primarily through games Key stage 4 - look at this through trampolining.

Religious Education

Ultimate Question – Are we alone in the Universe?

7-9

To investigate the existence of extra-terrestrials and the impact they could have on humanity

Science

Energy from Space

 Years 7,8,9 and 10

Students will watch a live webcast that takes them through what is energy, energy sources that we use now and energy sources that we may use in the future from space.

Energy literate pupils.  Able to appreciate the need for developing technologies that use alternative forms of energy and able to participate in the ‘Feed in tarrif ‘ initiative.

Textiles

Alien World

Yrs 7-9

Based on the work of Hunderwasser, we will be exploring ways of manipulating fabrics, yarn and dyes in unusual combinations.

Students will produce a series of large scale banners that can be linked to the Art outcomes to produce a large scale three dimensional structure.
